Active Press Publishing

Active Press Publishing is a photobook publisher for John Anderson.

Born in Washington, D.C., John "Jack" Anderson began working as a photographer in 1988 with the Washington City Paper and later graduated from the University of Texas with a BA in photojournalism. He worked as a staff photographer at The Austin Chronicle for over 20 years.

Throughout his career he has extensively documented protests, rallies and other political events with a particular interest in transgressive activism and law enforcement. In 2013 he published a photo book titled “In Search of a Revolution” on the local Occupy Wall Street movement. The book featured photographs that were instrumental in exposing undercover police officers who entrapped seven protesters with felony charges. This experience led him to reporting and writing articles on law enforcement surveillance issues such as social media monitoring software, fusion centers, the BlueLeaks hack, Stingrays and more.

His photographs have appeared in Rolling Stone, National Geographic, Ms. Magazine, The Intercept, Mother Jones, FRONTLINE, USA Today, and Texas Monthly among many others. His photographs have been exhibited at the Austin Museum of Art, Bullock Texas State History Museum, and Austin History Center. An accomplished musician since his teens, his bands Skam, No Trend, and HUG have had retrospective album releases on independent record labels Sea Note, Drag City Records, and Joyful Noise Recordings.

John is based in Austin, Texas.
